I spent over two weeks in Georgia and enjoyed every day, it’s a beautiful country where mountains rise straight up from The Black Sea in the west and continue across the country to Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. The country is lush with bright green foliage everywhere except on all but the highest mountain tops. You can explore at your own pace, stay in the coastal region, head east to beautiful Tbilisi or up into the wonderful mountains where you won’t find modern roads if any roads at all.
Georgian people ease into a smile, some smile straight away whereas it takes a few visits to some places before the dimples appear in their cheeks.
It’s been 23 years since Georgia got its independence from the former Soviet Union so, having been part of the union for 70 years I expected to see signs of this history but I didn’t see any evidence, not one building, this was a disappointment.
The food is cheap in price and sometimes quality, this is a problem as I like my food and try and eat healthily where I can. The bread is never fresh enough! They use cheese frequently and the meat from the BBQ good and at times in stew type dishes not so good, the only time I’ve seen vegetables is in stews. You can find good food and maybe because I’m on a budget I didn’t try hard enough so it was 50:50.
Georgia is a real variety with traditional and massively ‘over the top’ architecture, beautiful coast and mountains, the kids and younger adults embrace the modern world whilst the traditional way of life is in abundance in the mountain towns and villages. So, as you sit at a cafe a horse & cart may pass followed by a new car blaring out the latest Georgian sounds.
Georgia exceeded my expectations.
