174 miles / 7 hours of riding heaven.
Many people told me how great Flores is not only for riding but it’s beauty too. I understand having spent yesterday in one of the best dive resorts in the world and today crossing jungle clad mountains on a good tarmac road with virtually no other vehicles.
There can’t have been more than a mile of straight road all day, which means 173 miles were twisting around the mountains. I started at the coast in the far west of Flores then crossed the first mountain at 1,500 metres before dropping back down to the sea on the south coast before crossing the second mountain of the day at 1,200 metres. I didn’t pass through one town, just a handful of small villages. It seems the further east I travel in Indonesia the less populated it gets.
I stopped at a remote place on the coast for a rest and found I had stopped where they make traditional boats. Nobody spoke English but we somehow communicated and all smiled.
I eventually climbed the third mountain of the day and found a hotel in Bajawa at 1,400 metres.
What a day. What a day.
