What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching pertains to your life. Your life is unique, and your coaching experience with me will be unique, only you know what movement you desire. Between us we will create a safe, confidential space to explore where you are now, where you desire to be, and create a plan to help you fill the gap and achieve the mindset movement or goal you want.

There is no difference between life coaching and personal development coaching. Together we create an environment where you move from your current state to your desired state.

During our life coaching sessions, you decide what it is you want movement on. It is your space, your time and your decision as to what outcome you want. Personal development, career coaching, confidence coaching, health coaching, self-esteem coaching, motivation coaching, leadership coaching, business coaching, transformational coaching, you decide. It’s your unique life.

Together we focus on improving your self-awareness, understanding your challenges, and moving closer to your aspirations and goals, by using your strengths to improve certain parts of your life. Your career is part of your life, so we may choose to focus on your career goals, opportunities, transitions and decisions. You decide.

I describe my personal development as a transformation. You too can achieve a transformation.

Why Dan?

I left a successful corporate career behind to become a life coach, improve the quality of my life and help you. I feel all of my life experiences have funnelled me towards becoming a life coach. After a challenging childhood and early adulthood in Essex, I decided enough was enough and I started my journey of personal growth. 25 years on and I can help you on your personal journey.

We create an effective partnership, where you develop goals or define the mindset movement you want, and I provide encouragement and hold you to account on your journey. My training and experience means I ask the right questions, communicate effectively and get to the heart of your needs and desires in life. We identify your strengths and create a plan for you to use them for growth and forward movement.

“Dan immediately puts you at ease, making it easier for you to really ‘dig deep’ and explore your values and fundamental beliefs. This process resulted in me evaluating where I was in life compared to those values. Things needed to change, after going through the process it was so clear. I have never been surer of anything in my life. I highly recommend Dan’s life coaching services.”

What about wellbeing?

Having studied Positive Psychology (the science of wellbeing; what makes individuals and communities flourish rather than languish) at Masters degree level, my coaching incorporates both performance and wellbeing. Together, we create a mental health strategy for you.

Being a Positive Psychology Practitioner means I use my knowledge to help you understand your potential and emotions. Applying this knowledge will not only help you to achieve your goals and increase your performance, it will also improve your wellbeing.

What about my Expertise?

I invested in my education. I invested in my knowledge by completing a Psychology (Hons) degree, and further invested in my knowledge and skills when I undertook a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology & Coaching Psychology (MAPPCP) where I attained a distinction.

What about my accreditations & organisation memberships?

Dan Skeates MSc, MBPsS, EMCC accredited Associate Coach

I am a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) ‘Special Group in Coaching Psychology’, and accredited as an Associate Coach & Member of the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC).

I have the skill, knowledge and experience that you require from a professional and effective coach. However, the most important factor we must have for you to achieve movement from your current state to your desired state is the quality of our connection. I excel at being able to create a confidential, safe space for you to explore your thoughts.

Whether it is life coaching, business coaching or adventure travel coaching, my role is to help unlock your thoughts.

Why Dan?

I left a successful corporate career behind to become a life and business coach, improve the quality of my life and help you. I feel all of my life experiences have funnelled me towards becoming a coach.

Coaching is a powerful conversational intervention where I support you with the change you desire. As a coaching psychologist I use theoretically grounded and scientifically validated techniques to help you change your mindset or reach your goals in your personal, business and adventure life.

You may ponder on what type of coach you want to work with: life coach, adventure travel coach, career coach, business coach, personal development coach, confidence coach… I could go on! I pondered on what type of coaching I could offer; what type of coach am I?

I believe the efficacy and credibility a coach has is dependent on the expertise (skill & knowledge), experience and connection one has. Coaching is an unregulated industry –  anyone can start coaching immediately. So how can you determine the level of expertise, experience and connection a coach has? A little research will give you some of the answers; their biography and social media will give you an indication about what life experiences they have had, their qualifications inform you about their skill and knowledge level, and their accreditations and organisation memberships inform you how long they have been coaching and their experience in particular fields. A coach can have years of experience and expertise. However, if you do not have a great connection with your coach, forget it! How you feel about your coach and what you perceive they feel about you is a prerequisite to you achieving the change you desire. Establishing the quality of the connection between you and your coach is easy, you have to meet up, either face to face or online. This is the very essence of why I suggest we meet for a free initial meeting. Only after this can you decide if I am the coach for you.

Looking back, I was exactly where you are now, I had dreams, I wanted progression, I wanted more for myself and my kids. I know what it feels like to want more and realise that progress is slow or non-existent, at times it felt like I was going backwards! The first thing I did was to define what I wanted, then I created a plan of how to achieve it. I followed my plan, with small steps, but always going in the right direction. I enjoyed both the present and developing my future. That started over 20 years ago.

When I decided ‘enough was enough’, and I wanted to be happier and more fulfilled, ‘personal growth, life coaching, SMART goals, authentic behaviour and how to use my strengths to succeed’ wasn’t in my vocabulary. I was alone on my journey.

I left a successful corporate career behind to fulfil my potential and improve the quality of my life. Now, having studied positive psychology and coaching psychology  for many years, I recognise my behaviours over the last few decades were ideal for achieving forward movement in my personal and business life. However, it took me many years languishing in my dreams before I started my journey.

You don’t have to be alone on your journey.

Read my bio, and check out my social media where you can read about my experience, successes and personal development. I have started businesses and a charity, worked for corporations and travelled to over 80 countries around the world, and I am a very proud father of two amazing young adults.

I have found a vocation I really love, and my philosophy to coaching is simple; I want to be the best coach I can be for you, and I achieve this by using my expertise, experience and ability to effectively connect with you to help unlock your potential. My intention is to help you flourish, achieving sustainable forward movement towards a change in your mindset and / or achieving your goal(s).

The psychologist Carl Rogers really inspired me. He had a humanistic perspective to psychology and developed the person-centred approach. This means in my practice I have a holistic approach and focus on your self-awareness and thoughtful actions. I believe everyone is individual, has free will and is motivated to achieve their potential and self-actualise (where your personal potential is fully realised). I believe that by focusing on your strengths you can achieve your goal(s) and flourish.

I have worked with both individuals and organisations in Essex, Cambridge & London. You can read testimonials from people I have helped and what they say about their experience of my coaching

I have always helped people and experienced kindness wherever I have travelled throughout the world. However, it was whilst travelling on my Destination Unknown trip that I realised I wanted to focus on helping people. As soon as I returned home, I co-founded Cool to be Kind in Essex.

My interest in people then led me to study psychology, where I discovered the humanistic approach and then positive psychology, which focuses on both individual and societal wellbeing.
